Since the United States Surgeon General first released a report linking tobacco to cancer in the 1950s, Americans have slowly weaned themselves off of the addictive product. They've been so successful that last year, only 17.8% of U.S. adults smoked — an all-time low. Still, smoking remains the number one cause of preventable death in the U.S. and the habit is costing the government a lot of money in health care costs. So one county in Arizona has proposed a sweeping, controversial policy some say is discriminatory.

Pima County, the second most populous county in Arizona, will vote on Dec. 16 whether to reject job applicants who smoke and charge employees who do a 30% health insurance surcharge, reported the Arizona Daily Star. If passed, the policy would go into effect in July next year. Read more...

Frustrated by a lack of grand jury indictments in two recent cases involving unarmed black men who died in confrontations with police officers, the family of 12-year-old Tamir Rice, who was shot by a cop in Cleveland, wants the officer convicted — and they say prosecutors should skip the grand jury process entirely.

"We don’t need to have another grand jury," Rice family attorney Benjamin Crump said at a press conference on Monday, citing the video that captured the shooting as enough probable cause to indict the officer. "When there is probable cause you can do what the Constitution says and charge the person," Crump said. Read more...

LONDON — British YouTube sensation Zoella has been at the centre of an online backlash after it was revealed her publishers employed a ghostwriter to work on her debut novel Girl Online.

The book, which sold 78,000 copies in its first week after it was released by Penguin on Nov. 25, became the fastest-selling debut since Nielsen BookScan began keeping track of sales since 1998, surpassing efforts from J.K. Rowling and Dan Brown.

During the week, though, rumours started circulating that Zoella, whose real name is Zoe Sugg, had had a little help with the book, something she hinted at in the acknowledgements of her book and finally confirmed on Twitter. Read more...
